I went to the Pacquiao fight. Somehow, I was in a limo going to it. I was a guest of Toby Emmerich and Ben Affleck was in the limo too. At one point, I asked Ben, ‘You’ve done this pretty successfully! I have this fear [about directing].’ And he told me, ‘The fear is good. If you didn’t have fear, you’d have a problem. The fear is going to guide you. The fear is what tells you that everyday you need to keep pushing here, so embrace that.’ Which is a very Batman-y thing for him to say, actually.
I don’t know if he remembers that but I remember that. It was very comforting thing for me because my need and desire to make a horror film became about conquering my fear and mastering my fear.
